It flowers bi-annually and is the only native tree that flowers in racemes from the trunk of the tree, not the branches. Matai Matai grows throughout New Zealand. The wood is normally golden brown in colour and being hard was often used for flooring. Rewarewa New Zealand Rewarewa's common name is Honeysuckle and is a tree not a vine often reaching 12-15 meters before the first branch arises. The flowers are red and are much prized by birds and bees for their nectar. Rimu Highly valued native tree. Used extensively in the building and furniture trades. Tawa Tawa grows throughout New Zealand. Being a strong wood it was prized by the Maori people for making their long bird spears. Tawhai Commonly called the New Zealand Silver Beech. It is very rare and is only found in a few locations.
