More than 60 varieties of flax grow in New Zealand. The long, green leaves of the plant strong white fibre. The Maori used the fibre to make warm clothing and the European settlers used the fibre to make rope. The Maori used flax for medicine and often traded it with Europeans. Flax oil was used to heal wounds.
