The Eagle Stingray is common in New Zealand coastal waters. They are a close relative to sharks and skates and are easily distinguished by their olive green, yellow or dark brown colour. The Eagle Stingray has blue/grey dorsal markings and white ventral surface. They have a prominent square, fleshy rostrum and the tail is long and slender with a small dorsal fin at the base.
Eagle Rays have fused teeth forming broad crushing plates in each jaw. These are used for breaking open the shells of invertebrate, such as crabs, that they feed on.
